University Of Hull – Calder Building Reception Refurbishment

Cooper Construction Services was appointed by the University of Hull to carry out the full refurbishment of the Calder Building’s reception area. The university recognised the need to refresh this space so that it could provide a more welcoming and professional environment for students, staff, and visitors. Our brief was to modernise the look and feel of the reception while also improving its practicality and functionality.

The project began with the careful removal of the existing reception furniture and fittings. This created a blank canvas for the transformation and allowed our team to reconfigure the space with the client’s new design aspirations in mind. From the outset, it was important that the works were carried out efficiently and with minimal disruption to the daily activities of the university, so our team planned the programme of works in detail to ensure a smooth delivery.

A major aspect of the refurbishment was the installation of new electrical and lighting systems. Modern, energy-efficient fittings were introduced to create a brighter, more inviting atmosphere. The improved lighting not only enhances the aesthetics of the reception but also ensures that the space is more practical for day-to-day use.
One of the standout features of the refurbishment is the installation of a bespoke photowall. This was designed to provide a striking visual centrepiece and to give the reception its own distinct identity. The photowall now acts as a focal point for anyone entering the building, adding character and showcasing the modern and forward-looking ethos of the university.

The flooring throughout the reception was completely replaced, creating a durable and contemporary finish that complements the other new elements of the space. This was paired with a full programme of painting and decorating. A modern colour palette was chosen to provide a clean, professional backdrop while still ensuring the area feels warm and welcoming.
As part of our sustainable approach, we also applied vinyl wrapping to selected surfaces within the reception. This was a cost-effective and efficient way to update finishes without the need to replace existing materials. The vinyl wrap provided a high-quality finish that tied the new design together, contributing to both the aesthetics and practicality of the refurbishment.
The end result is a reception that has been completely transformed. Where the space once felt dated and tired, it now feels modern, vibrant, and professional. The improved lighting, upgraded finishes, and the addition of the photowall have all contributed to an atmosphere that makes a strong first impression on everyone who enters the Calder Building.
This project demonstrates the ability of Cooper Construction Services to deliver high-quality refurbishment works in the education sector. By combining careful planning, efficient project management, and a focus on detail, we ensured that the works were delivered on time and to the satisfaction of the client. The University of Hull now has a reception area that not only meets their practical needs but also reflects the dynamic and forward-thinking nature of the institution.
