Refurbishment & Playground Works

Cooper Construction Services are proud to completed works for Barmby on the Marsh Primary School.

Works began by removing the existing 40mm thick playground rubber to the required area, during this, we exposed a buried inspection chamber, we lifted this to inspect the condition of inside which was in working order but needed a light clean.

Following this, we raised the chamber to line in with the new finished playground so that it was accessible in the future.

The inspection chamber lids were recessed lids so that the rubber crumb playground would infill it to continue the pattern and provide a safe playground for the children. We then re-levelled the type 1 base already existing with fresh type 1 and compacted it, level checking as we went.

Following this, we were requested by the school to remove two tables that were fitted into the playground, these later turned out to be decorative table tops on old canopy steel posts, after cutting and removing and infilling the holes with type 1, we handed the ground over to DCM Surfaces who proceeded to lay a 40mm thick coloured EPDM as per the design.

A 20mm black sublayer was laid first over the whole area and cured. The colored top was then laid on top of this in stages to allow curing of each colour as it was laid. Following this, the surface was left to cure and then swept and handed over to the client.

The playground top coat is a done by mixing 1-3mm coloured EPDM rubber with an adhesive in a mixer (not a standard site mixer but a sealed top loaded specialist mixer) to make a wet pour rubber. the rubber is then poured into the locations that it is required and allowed to set, in order to form the rainbow, two coloured were poured and allowed to set, they were then cut to the shape required and acted as a shutter for the next colours to butt up to. This process was repeated till all of the colours were laid. The area was cleaned and cleared after work and photographed and signed off by myself.
