Playground Refurbishment: A Complete Transformation

Playground Refurbishment: A Complete Transformation

We recently completed a detailed and rewarding playground refurbishment project, working closely with our client to ensure every aspect of the site was finished to a high standard, providing a safe and vibrant space for children to enjoy.

Initial Works: Surface Removal and Inspection

Our work began with the removal of the existing 40mm thick playground rubber surface across the designated area. During this process, we uncovered a buried inspection chamber. After carefully lifting the lid to inspect the internal condition, we found the chamber was structurally sound but required a light clean.

To ensure the chamber remained accessible in the future, we raised it to align perfectly with the new finished playground level. The chamber lids used were recessed, allowing the new rubber surface to infill neatly, maintaining a smooth, continuous playground surface without compromising safety or aesthetics.

Base Preparation and Additional Works

With the old surface removed, we re-levelled the existing Type 1 base. Fresh Type 1 material was introduced where needed, compacted, and carefully checked for level throughout to create a solid and even foundation.

During this phase, the school requested the removal of two tables that were embedded into the playground. Upon investigation, these turned out to be decorative tabletops fixed onto old steel canopy posts. We carefully cut and removed these, infilled the resulting holes with Type 1, and compacted the area, ready for the new surfacing.

Surface Installation: A Two-Layer System

With the groundwork prepared, we handed the project over to our partners at DCM Surfaces. Their team installed a robust two-layer system:

  • First Layer: A 20mm thick black EPDM sublayer was laid across the entire area and allowed to cure.

  • Top Layer: A 40mm thick coloured EPDM rubber surface was then installed in line with the approved playground design.

The coloured EPDM top coat was created by mixing 1–3mm coloured rubber granules with a specialist adhesive in a sealed, top-loading mixer. This method ensures a consistent wet-pour mix, critical for achieving a durable and smooth finish.

To create the vibrant rainbow pattern, colours were poured in stages. After curing, each section was precisely cut to form a neat edge that acted as a shutter for the next colour to butt up against. This painstaking process was repeated until the entire design was completed, ensuring crisp, clean lines between each vibrant colour.

Final Handover

After all the colours were installed and fully cured, the surface was carefully swept clean, leaving a flawless finish ready for use. We then officially handed the playground back over to the client.

The result is a bright, safe, and highly durable playground surface that the children can enjoy for many years to come.
